Singapore agency develops iris biometrics gates for in-motion capture with NEC tech

According to a statement from Singapore’s technology agency HTX, Mobile Identification (IOTM) is a prototype airport biometrics system that can authenticate users without the need to stand, easing stop-and-go bottlenecks when travellers submit biometric scans to pass through checkpoints.

The prototype was designed by HTX’s Biometric and Analytical Technology Center and uses NEC’s biometric technology. NEC is a company that manufactures its own airport kiosks. Users look at the iris scanner as they go through the clearance channel. NEC has also previously worked with Tencent to develop a system to collect iris biometric information from people in cars at the Singapore border.

Many iris scanners require the user to stand at a close distance in order to read. Compared to traditional scanners, IOTM scans iris images at almost twice the distance.

The system uses artificial intelligence to detect people who are trying to walk through security lines or tailgate behind another passenger. The barrier was slammed shut to prevent the bad guys from getting through.

The system uses “device optimization algorithms” to overcome user errors and changing environmental conditions.
